Abstract: Jacob Zollman „The practices of Interstate Arbitration before World War I. Actors, Advocates and Critics“

My presentation will analyze the practices of interstate arbitration in international law in the context of the nineteenth century. Arbitration awards as well as the procedures and the domestic and / or international controversies on the decision to submit a conflict with another state to third-party arbitration will be scrutinized to this end. Furthermore, the advocates of interstate arbitration, mostly originating from the peace movement and their aspirations for pacification by ‘juridification’ will be discussed together with voices critical of the prospect of interstate arbitration.
